Using PG 600® to Improve Oestrus
PG 600 induces oestrus and promotes ovulation in sows post weaning, by stimulating the growth of ovarian follicles and formation of the corpus luteum.
Per dose, PG 600 contains:
Serum Gonadotrophin (PMSG) 400i.u.
Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) 200 i.u.
The name PG 600 is derived from the total of 600 IU given per dose.
PMSG stimulates the growth of the ovarian follicle and HCG promotes its ovulation and the formation of the corpus luteum.
In the first few hours after weaning, the secretion of naturally-occurring follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) is stimulated. These hormones act together to regulate follicular development, leading to ovulation.
By combining PMSG and HCG in one product, a fertile oestrus can develop at doses lower than those required if administered separately.
Advantages of using PG 600 in gilts:
1. Improved organisation and planning of re-stocking, including the reduced number of replacement gilts, grouping of gilts by the timing of oestrus to optimise the detection of first, second and third oestrus, i.e. time of service or insemination
2. Management of problem gilts to minimise extra rearing costs
3. Reduction in the number of unproductive days in prospective sows
4. Increasing oestrus rates
