Producing Healthy Salmon - Podcast interview
When asked about her three top tips for producers to optimise vaccination techniques, independent vet Marian McLoughlin said well trained and motivated staff are key to the whole exercise.
“Correct vaccinations are critical, and when carried out accurately will significantly help the health and welfare of fish and subsequent farm profits. It’s therefore highly beneficial to invest in training,” adds Marian.
Regular monitoring on-farm, by someone who is not necessarily involved in the vaccination process, can also help to ensure quality control is in place and all procedures are carried out to a high standard.
Marian also explains the importance of planning before carrying out any vaccination procedures, for example making sure fish are of a similar size, and how disease prevention strategies can significantly help fish farmers ensure high quality fish health and welfare.
“Fish vaccination plays a key role in reducing infection pressure and the development of herd immunity. It reduces the need for antibiotics, and can result in improved welfare, productivity, and healthy fish.
“Overall, the health and welfare of any farm animal depends on a series of optimum conditions, for example the selection of stock and optimum feeding. We can’t ignore good husbandry, and the observation of animals on a day to day basis, as well as ensuring good biosecurity, will help to make sure you have healthy and productive fish,” concludes Marian.
