PRRS Check
PRRS virus infects all ages of pigs causing viraemia and shedding of the virus in saliva, faeces and semen for several months. PRRS is endemic within the UK and can cause significant economic impact.
The first step in the control of PRRS is to know the PRRS-status of your herd.
MSD Animal Health can support you on this through PRRS Check.
WHAT IS PRRS CHECK?
MSD Animal Health UK have partnered with Sci-Tech laboratory and APHA to provide a complete farm diagnostic package to determine the PRRS status of the farm.
A report will be provided with all the results and the PRRS status of the farm as well as advice on a customised approach for the herd, focusing on the production phase at most risk.
-
WHICH SAMPLES ARE LIKELY TO BE REQUIRED?
• Oral fluids or blood samples from gilts at arrival and before service
» to determine health status and best acclimation strategy
• Blood swabs (n=30) from piglets at birth
» to determine breeding herd status
• Blood swabs (n=30) from piglets at weaning
» to determine breeding herd and weaners status
• Oral fluids (n=2) or blood samples (n=5) from nursery, growing and fattening pigs every 3-4 weeks
» to determine timing of infection and/or status
-
WHICH TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT?
• ELISA in blood samples
» to determine if pigs have had contact with the virus
• PCR testing in blood, blood swabs or oral fluid
» to detect the presence of the virus
• PRRS sequencing
» to differentiate between vaccine-type and wild-type virus
» to link with previous strains present in the herd
