Thinking of Breeding from Your Mare?

It may seem a nice idea to breed from your mare but in the UK there are now thousands more horses than there are good homes. It’s important to ask yourself whether you really need to breed at all.

Reasons to breed include continuing the blood lines of a successful competition horse, owners wanting to breed from a much-loved mare, owners wanting the experience of producing a youngster, or to give an out-of-work mare a role.

Careful consideration should be taken before putting your mare in foal.
Careful consideration should be taken before putting your mare in foal.

Whilst all of these are valid reasons a lot of consideration should be taken first as not only does getting a mare in foal and raising a foal have significant financial implications, but it is also another animal to be responsible for.

World Horse Welfare has produced some great information and a downloadable leaflet relating to this subject titled; ‘Need to breed?’ Anyone thinking of breeding from their mare is urged to read this information first.
