Administering Caninsulin

Administer your pet’s insulin treatment at the same time(s) every day.

Before broaching, Caninsulin should be stored upright and refrigerated between +2 and +8°C.

After refrigerated Caninsulin is broached, vials and in-use cartridges inside VetPens can be stored at up to 25°C. Broached vials should still be stored upright, whereas broached cartridges may be stored inside the VetPen on its side.

Do not freeze.

Protect from light.

Caninsulin should be gently shaken until a uniformly milky suspension is obtained and left to sit while foam dispenses.

Broached Caninsulin should be discarded by 42 days.

Feeding Your Dog

Your dog’s diet should be consistent and appropriate. A nutritionally complete, dry or canned dog food should be fed in consistent amounts at the same time(s) each day.

Give enough food to maintain your dog’s weight.

Extra tidbits and treats should be avoided, unless appropriate. This requires cooperation from family and friends, too.

If your dog has a reduced appetite and eats only half of its meal, reduce the dose of insulin by half. If the situation lasts more than 24 hours, contact the practice.

Always feed your dog before administering Caninsulin. If your dog is not eating, DO NOT TREAT WITH Caninsulin and contact the practice.

For dogs on once-daily administration of Caninsulin:

Food should be rationed half in the morning prior to the morning injection, the other half in the evening about 8-12 hours after the morning injection.

For dog’s on twice-daily administration of Caninsulin:

Feed 2 meals a day, each around the time of Caninsulin administration.

Caution
In the event your pet shows signs of wobbliness, tremor or weakness, this may be a sign of low blood glucose. Feed a sweet biscuit, a small meal or give something sugary such as honey or powdered glucose and call the practice for advice.
