Disease? Not On My Farm! Ambassador
Tom Jones
- Upland beef and sheep farmer in mid-Wales
- 1,200 Romney/Cheviot cross ewes
- Majority of lambs leave farm as stores at weaning
- 50-head Angus/Limousin/Charollais cross suckler herd
A third-generation farmer, Tom has made significant changes to the family’s intensive system since coming home to farm a decade ago, using his learnings from contract shepherding and shearing experience.
He has doubled the flock size, expanded the acreage and adopted a back-to-basics approach with low inputs.
Routine treatments Tom views as essentials include fluke drench for ewes and cattle, clostridial vaccination for ewes and cattle wormer.
He is open to exploring new immunisations, as long as they fit with the low-input system – in 2021 he started using EAE and toxoplasmosis vaccination after a bad bout of abortion and believes productivity gains are worth the investment.
